Two Ingredient Chalk Paint Recipe
Chalk Paint is a great option to paint furniture or update decor. Specifically, it applies smoothly, dries quickly and can easily be sanded to create a distressed look. However, chalk paint can be quite expensive. Therefore, I am sharing my favorite way chalk paint recipe. Then, four more ingredients you can use to make your own.
Please know that chalk paint is not actually made with chalk. Therefore, this paint, nor any mixed with household ingredients, will be exactly like store bought chalk paint. However, it shares the same velvety characteristic of chalk paint and similar distressing techniques can be achieved.
Chalk Paint Recipe
While this recipe calls for only 2 main ingredients, here are a few things that make it easy to mix, as well.
- Any latex paint – paint samples work great for small projects
- DAP joint compound
- Measuring cups – a set for DIY projects only
- Angled spatula
- All purpose mixing containers with lids
- Lidded mason jars to store paint
- Chip paint brushes – no need for expensive brushes when using chalk paint
1. Pour 1 cup paint into container. With a spatula, add 1/4 cup of joint compound. 2. Mix together. Use immediately or keep in air tight container.Chalk Paint Recipe

Four More Chalk Paint Recipes
While this is my favorite chalk paint recipe, there are other ways to get a similar paint finish. For example, here are a few other combinations that you can use to make your own chalk paint.
- Plaster of Paris – 3 parts paint to 1 part plaster of Paris, add water as needed
- Unsanded grout – 4 parts paint to 1 part unsanded grout, add water as needed
- Baking soda – 3 parts paint to 1 part baking soda
- Calcium carbonate – 2 parts paint to 1 part calcium carbonate
