There’s no school like the old school and this vintage inspired back to school themed tablescape is perfect for getting your kids excited on the first day of school. By shopping your home and gathering your kids’ school supplies, you can create a fun ‘back to school’ tradition with little or no extra cost. It is a fun way to wish your kids a great school year!
Enjoying a big breakfast together on the first day of school has been a fun tradition in our home for as long as I can remember, but a few years ago, I decided to go all out and decorate ‘BIG!’ However, I didn’t buy one additional thing! So what did I do to make back to school an exciting time for my kids? I shopped my home!
I searched for school related items in my daughter’s American Girl doll accessories and in our scrapbooking supplies from the craft room. If you are out and about shopping, check out Target’s Dollar Spot for super cheap and fun ‘back to school’ themed items.
I borrowed supplies from our ‘extra school supply stash.’ This is where I keep school supplies on hand for homework and replenishing supplies at school throughout the year. It’s a great idea to buy extra school supplies when they go on sale to keep in your own supply stash.
The last thing that I did was use items that I had for decorating in my decor closet. For this tablescape, I used a few vintage finds like yardsticks, lanterns and glass jars for holding supplies.
Gather any items that remind you of school! Use what you have to layer and add height to your display! Glass jars are great for collecting school supplies. Add flowers! You can set up a display on the buffet table or in the center of your table.
I used chalkboard placemats from Crate and Barrel that I have had for years. With a white chalk marker, I wrote numbers and letters on the side. I layered a sheet of vintage inspired scrapbook paper on the placemat. In a small ticking stripe bag, I added napkins and wooden spoons, then a few supplies just for fun like chalk, twig pencils and a vintage ruler. With a wooden clothespin, I clipped a small sheet of vintage inspired handwriting paper – again, this paper is just a school kit for dolls from Michael’s, but you can use any type of paper! Anything as simple as construction paper or notebook paper, but scrapbook paper is sold by the sheet too at Hobby Lobby.
I hope your kids have a great school year! My son is pursuing a job in another state and my daughter is starting middle school this year. I am getting all the mom feelings! Little traditions like these make the every day moments like back to school even more special. I would love it if you pin these ideas to your Pinterest board and follow me on Instagram at @CuterTudor!
