How to Style a Halloween Centerpiece for your Holiday Tablescape
When I think of Halloween, I think of jack o lanterns with glowing faces, homemade costumes and trick or treating! Halloween is a fun time for our family, therefore I wanted to create a fun, yet functional Halloween centerpiece during this holiday season. I call this technique the ‘deconstructed tablescape’ because all the parts of a tablescape are here, but simply grouped together in a crate. You can use any type of large container to gather your items from vintage tool boxes, wooden crates, or galvanized caddies. I hope this halloween centerpiece inspires you to not overthink your holiday tables, but to use what you have and think ‘inside the box!’
Black cats and orange pumpkins are my favorite for Halloween.
The deconstructed tablescape is one of my favorite centerpiece ideas for casual dining get togethers. Often, I style a formal tablescape for a holiday or special occasion weeks in advance so I can enjoy it. If we eat in the formal dining room with the entire tablescape set up, we just set aside some of the dishes or decor. It can get a little time consuming but I don’t mind.
However, I came up with this idea while staging at my favorite home decor stores in Waco, Texas. I wanted a different way to display dishes rather than setting individual place settings. Consequently, it has become one of my favorite ways to style a kids table, casual get together or for outdoor dining.
During the summer time, I often keep a caddy like this full of matching paper products, cups and silverware on the kitchen island. I add a few summer favorites like sparklers and mini flags for a festive look. If you missed it check it out here. This works great because older kids or guests can grab what they need to dine; yet, it doesn’t interfere with everyday dining by having a crowded table. Since summer time has come to an end, I have changed up this caddy to use as a fun Halloween centerpiece on a kids table. It is the perfect combination of function and form! And it looks cute, y’all!
First, use your favorite holiday themed table runner. My mother in law gave me the idea to layer mesh fabric with a table runner. Start with a layer of decorative mesh fabric like this orange metallic mesh from Hobby Lobby. Layer another table runner over the top to create lots of texture as a base to your halloween centerpiece.
Second, fill the caddy with dinner plates, pretty holiday themed salad/dessert plates and chargers. Just like in family photos, put the ‘tallest in the back.’ I started with a stack of plates in the center, but you can see later on that I separate into two stacks and added chargers. Just play around with what you have and see what works best with the items you have and size or shape of the crate. Since this idea is used more for casual dining, I usually use melamine or paper plates. I have even used my white porcelain plates, but it is up to you. You can also add napkins and a jar with utensils like forks, knives and spoons.
Finally, the fun part of pulling it all together! The exciting part of decorating for me is the challenge. It is almost like putting a puzzle together. You have pieces that you want to use, but you have to figure out how to make them work well together. Just get a variety of decor from your decor stash, and have fun. You will need something for height, like greenery or holiday stems, and something interesting in a fun shape, like a holiday themed decoration.
Some decor can be placed directly in the crate and others will need to be placed on risers for added height. You can use small jars or extra decor to stack items up. Therefore, I decided to place these fun holiday picks into a lantern for height and to group them nicely.
I added galvanized chargers, orange melamine dinner plates, small halloween themed plates and pumpkin themed napkins. On either side of the crate, I added witch hats stacked on mason jars and a metal lantern filled with halloween picks and a few mini pumpkins. In front of the crate, I placed a ‘boo’ word cutout to finish the Halloween centerpiece.
